    A Bigger Fire by David Hockney is an interior still life image of his fireplace in his 17th century rustic country home, Le Grande Coeur, in Normandy, France. A Ipad drawing turned digital print, Hockney created the artwork during the anxieties of the pandemic lockdown, symbolising spaces of simplicity and comfort, which the New Yorker used as its front cover image for the December 2020 issue.
    Relating back to many of the still life artworks, Hockney has created with the modern technology of an Ipad screen, (Amaryllis in Vase, Untitled 329), A Bigger Fire is a striking depiction of a fireplace lit, depicting a bucolic comfort to his new French countryside home.
    The artwork is created using a rich but earthy colour palette: a strip of burgundy bricks lines the top of the fireplace contrasting with the beige brick slabs at the base and the brown background, including typical fireside objects, such as a fire brush, shovel and bellows. Contrasting to the warm, comforting tones of the fireplace is the vibrant depiction of the blazing fire: rendered in a swarm of twisting, graphic lines in bright orange and yellow shades.
    In A Bigger Fire, Hockney freely utilises the digital medium; he creates bold areas of shaded colour and different forms of ‘brushstrokes’ from graphic and squiggly lines. Hockney has been open about his embrace of the digital medium and the freedom it has given his artwork because you can just ‘erase any ‘mistakes.’’
